Tillandsia (sometimes they are also called Kykatka) are interesting aerial plants in English airplants, which belong to the family of bromeliad plants. They live only from air and atmospheric moisture, which they absorb with their leaves. They grow attached to trees, bushes, even rocks, but not as parasites, but as epiphytes. This means that they only live on the plant, but do not take any nutrients from it. They come from subtropical and tropical South and Central America and the southern part of North America, elsewhere they are grown as houseplants. Cultivating tillandsias is undemanding, they do not need any pot or substrate. They look great in all kinds of terrariums, tied to a wooden base, bark, in pots, we can attach them to a snail shell or a seashell, there are no limits to imagination.

We wrote more about tillandsia in our article .

svetlo Light

They need plenty of indirect sunlight, the more fleshy silver species can tolerate more light, even direct. Conversely, species with smaller and greener leaves should be protected from direct sunlight.

zalivka Watering

Tillandsia can either be watered (thoroughly!) about twice a week (more times in the summer months) or once a week we submerge them completely in water and let them soak for 15-20 minutes. But we have to make sure that they dry well inside after watering, so we can put them upside down on a towel and let the water drain well. Avoid using hard water as it can clog their pores. The best is rainwater, or water that has been boiled and allowed to stand. Sometimes we can also add a special fertilizer for air plants to the water. Tillandsia can then bloom.

vzduch Humidity

The silvery fleshy species are more of a succulent type, so they require less water and air humidity. They will thrive freely in the home or in an open terrarium=aerarium. Conversely, species with smaller and greener leaves need more water and air humidity. They will therefore thrive in greenhouses, closed terrariums or moist containers.

mnozeni Propagation

It is propagated by seeds, which is a very slow process, or by cuttings from the mother plant.

problemy Common problems

  • If the inside of the plant does not dry out when soaked in water, it can start to rot.
  • If the plant is blooming, don't water it, it's just growing during that time. The flowers are delicate and susceptible to manipulation.
  • If the plant is twisted, very pale, gray to brown, it needs to be saturated with water.
  • The lower leaves sometimes dry out and turn brown - this is normal and nothing to worry about, just pluck them off gently.
