About the plant:
Calathea or calathea comes from the tropical regions of South and Central America and belongs to bushy plants with thin stems and relatively wide and large leaves. In the rainforest, it forms a dense undergrowth, most often in the shade of tall trees. Calathea together with the genera Marantha, Ctenanthe and Stromanthe form a very similar group of so-called praying mantises plants ( prayer plants in English ). They are called so because they always begin to straighten their leaves towards evening, which can resemble hands folded in prayer. In the morning, they delight and open their leaves again. Kalateas are distinguished from other praying mantises by the fact that their leaves grow curled into cones.

Calathea Makoyana impresses with more oval leaves with a variety of green shades. Its stems are dark.

Light

The plant needs enough diffused light for healthy growth. Avoid direct sunlight, which could burn the leaves. The ideal site is the north and east side near the windows or the west side with fading weak sunlight.

Watering

Water with lukewarm water. The substrate should never dry out completely, but we pay attention to overflowing.

Humidity

The plant requires increased air humidity, so we often mist its leaves or place the flowerpot on a bowl of water and pebbles.

Propagation

We can propagate the plant by dividing the bunches, for example during transplanting, when we separate a young and mature plant from the mother plant.

Common problems

Overwatering: Too much water can cause root rot, yellowing and leaf drop. Dry air: Due to insufficient air humidity, the leaves of the plant can start to dry from the tips and turn yellow or curl. Burn: Direct light can burn the leaves of the plant, causing dark and dry spots.
