Alocasia Frydek Variegata

The plant is photographed in a terracotta pot.

About the plant:
Alocasia , or alocasia in Czech , is a genus of the Araceae family . These plants are massive herbs with a thick rhizome. Their homeland is the subtropical and tropical regions of Asia, Australia and the Pacific. In Southeast Asia and Oceania, they are particularly popular for their edible rhizomes and small boiled leaves. Although in their raw state they contain calcium oxalate, which causes mucous membrane irritation and nausea, they are edible after heat treatment. At the same time, the rhizomes are also sought after by Indian and South Asian traditional medicine for their healing effects.

Alocasia Micholitziana Variegata ( also known as Frydek Variegata ) is a very rare collector's species of alocasia with large, dark green velvety leaves with white variegation.
Alocasia generally belongs to the rather demanding houseplants, which are sensitive to temperature, humidity and overwatering. At the same time, keep in mind with alocasias that they often replace old leaves with new ones (that is, they usually do not increase their number, especially in younger plants.

svetlo Light

The plant needs enough diffused light for healthy growth, under good conditions it can also be exposed to the sun, but beware of sunburn. The ideal site is the north and east side near the windows or the west side with fading weak sunlight.

zalivka Watering

We water in 1-2 weeks, it prefers wetter soil. However, let the upper part of the substrate dry out between waterings. Overwatering could cause rotting of the roots. Alocasia does not tolerate waterlogging of the soil, water the plant little by little and allow the plant more moisture.

vzduch Humidity

It is a tropical plant that prefers higher air humidity. Due to the variegation, limit spraying the leaves with water (too much dew may cause the white parts of the leaves to turn brown.)

mnozeni Propagation

Older plants can be propagated by division or broken tubers. Leaf cuttings are a big nut to grow, so it is not recommended to use them to propagate.

problemy Common problems

  • Overwatering: Too much water can cause root rot, yellowing or leaf drop.
  • Brown spots on the leaves: Brown spots on the leaves can refer to too much direct light that burned the plant or to cold weather (e.g. draft).
  • Dry air: due to insufficient air humidity, the leaves of the plant can start to dry from the tips and turn yellow or curl.

How does DMP delivery work?

All plants and some accessories on our e-shop are sent directly from the grower in Holland. We want them to be at your place as soon as possible and not spend time going around different warehouses and stores. We ship part of our own products marked with the Made in DMP label directly from our warehouse in Prague.
Therefore, it may happen that you will be charged a higher price for shipping, because you have things in the basket both from the grower and from our own production.
If you have products worth CZK 2,000 (For SK 82 EUR) or more in your basket, you will always have FREE shipping!

For some products, such as a book or a physical gift voucher, you can choose the pick-up option in our brick-and-mortar store.

Personal collection is not possible for most goods, because the store does not offer the same range of plants and accessories as in the e-shop. If you are not sure about the choice, stop by in person and together we will choose or order the right one!
